Examples

This page shows some examples of how OziPhotoTool is being used. It is not actually up to date with the current version but will give you an idea. If you have a great example of how you use OziPhotoTool let me know at oziphototool@alistairdickie.com.

For an example of automatic HTML generation click here.

Paragliding at Mt Spring

This example showcases automatic HTML generation combined with Google Earth KMZ generation. The template used for HTML was the 'standard' template with no modifications. The template for KMZ generation was the 'basic_track' template slightly modified with the text:

<p> <a href="@@website@@fnmx.html">Full size image</a>

In order for this to work a custom string replacement code called 'website' needed to be set to "http://www.oziphototool.com/examples/flight/images/". This makes the reference in the CDATA part of the description tag in Google Earth link back to the full size image from HTML generation. Pretty neat eh?

See the example here.

Environmental Management in Vietnam

John Dickie is an Environmental Planner working on an Australian government aid project in Vietnam. The aim of the project is to improve the lifestyle of those that live on an island in the Mekong river near the Cambodian border. He takes numerous digital photos while on field trips in the project area, often over 100 in a day.

"Prior to using OziPhotoTool I was manually recording the location of some of the photos then painstakingly matching them up when I got back to the office. Now I make sure I have fresh batteries in the GPS, turn it on at the start of the day and go about my normal work, not having to worry about where I am. Photos are taken for many purposes; record an interview, show a change in development, mark out irrigation assets, and just general interest. In a few minutes each evening I can download all photos, the GPS information and produce the maps of where I have been and via the photos have a record of what I have done. I can do less in the field, less in the office, and end up with a more accurate record"

The example shown here is a brief record of the importance to the Vietnamese of boating canals in an annually flooded area.

John uses a Garmin e-trex GPS and a Sony DSC-P1 digital camera. He processes everything on a Toshiba Satellite Pro 4300 with 340 Mb RAM running Windows ME.

Macrophotography of Lichens and Fungi

Harvey Marchant is a marine microbiologist with the Australian Antarctic Division.  In his words:

"My hobby is macro photography. I'm particularly interested in lichens, fungi and insects. While I use a 35mm SLR for most of my work, I use a digital camera to record the habitat of the subjects. OziPhotoTool enables me to locate precisely where I took the photos with waypoints on a map and watermark the images."

The examples shown below are from the Jeffries track west of Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. It was particulary important to Harvey to record the altitude of his subjects. He was pretty keen to do this in meters rather than feet as was the default in OziPhotoTool 1.4. Version 1.5 saw his suggestion incorporated.

Harvey uses a Garmin V GPS with an external antenna into a HP510 laptop. His digital camera is a Sony DSC-F55.

A Walk in the Park

This is my example. It is included with every installation of OziPhotoTool. The raw images and track file were the first I took to assist me in developing OziPhotoTool. The stars of these photos are my children, Alexandra and Samuel.

I use a Garmin e-trex GPS and a Canon G2 digital camera. The computer I use to develop OziPhotoTool and do all my work on is an AMD 1800+ based system with 512 Mb RAM running Windows XP.

Files

  • parkmap.zip (20 kb - Includes both a small .jpg image and the OziExplorer .map file)
  • ParkWalk.wpt (1 kb - For OpenFileAttachmetn to work in OziExplorer the photos below should be in a folder called parkwalk in the OziExplorer directory
  • The track file and raw images can be found in the oziphototool/testdata directory of every installation.

  • Time Delta Manager
    • Camera GMT Offset = +11:00
  • Waypoint Properties (that differ from the default settings)
